the basics

A pop up choir is just as it sounds— we show up, we learn one song, we sing our hearts out to a song that makes us feel something… and we leave. Unlike typical choirs, there is no audition, no regular commitment, and really, no public performances. We sing for ourselves.

You can find all the info and register on our events page (OneLoveOneVoiceNC.com/events). If you’d like to stay in the loop for our events, be sure to join our newsletter so that you get all the updates!

While having experience in a choir and reading sheet music is helpful, it is not necessary. We will provide the music, the lyrics and the vibe. All you need to bring is your willingness to try something new and your big heart. And as far as being able to sing? The great thing about the vibe we create in the choir is that you can blend in as much is you’d like. We don’t care as much about people getting the notes right, as we do that they get the feeling and energy right. We want you to feel safe to sing and to belong, regardless of how much music training you’ve had.
-
The short answer is “no.” Think of this as a singing workshop. We learn music that stirs something deep inside, and our objective is to feel that and to bring that feeling into whatever we are singing. You are singing for you, for your own empowerment and joy.
-
Popular songs from award-winning music artists that make people feel something. We could sing a classic rock anthem from the 80’s, and then next month, sing a mashup of Sia and Coldplay, and the next month, a nostalgic Eric Whitacre throwback from some of our high school choir days. We’re all about choosing music that moves you in the moment, making it magical.
-
Nope! No auditions and no regular commitment. You get to choose which events you come for. We have folks that are committed to being a regular at our events, but each event is a different group of singers.
EVENT logistics
-
Events taking place at the Winston Salem Wellness Collective will be indoors and air conditioned to a comfortable indoor temperature. If the location changes for an event, we’ll let you know ahead of time what to expect.
-
Absolutely! And you’ll be singing with singers of all different levels of experience, not for any kind of audience. You’re singing most of all, for YOU.
-
Think high vibe and very casual. Leave any negativity at the door so you can invite in all the positive vibes and connection that happens when we sing.
-
We’ll be standing part of the time, sitting either on the floor or on a chair part of the time. Chairs are limited—there are a mix of about 10 chairs, barstools and low seated poufs. So if you need a chair, let us know well ahead of time, or come early and save your spot.
-
If your friend or teenage child has registered for the event, and you’ve signed any necessary waivers for your teenager to participate in the event, then absolutely. We do not allow drop offs for teens age 13-15. A parent/guardian must be with them the entire time. Children under the age of 13 are not permitted at our event.
-
If you’ve registered for our event then we encourage you to participate as much as you can. But we don’t allow folks to simply come and listen. We get it, our pop up choir is a whole vibe, and people leave feeling lifted and happier. But it isn’t a performance, and we aren’t trying to showcase our talent to the world or be judged on how well we do. That’s not what this is about. Our event is more like an interactive singing workshop than a concert. The only performing we do is for ourselves, and we like it that way.
-
At this time, we do not require anyone to wear a mask. If you’d like to wear a mask for your own comfort, that’s fine.
If you’re sick, please stay home. We have a generous 24hr cancellation/refund policy and we definitely don’t want to spread germs in our space.
“I’M AFRAID TO ASK BUT…”
-
No big deal. Seriously. Leave your inner critic at the door. This is about the vibe much more than it is about the notes.
-
Some of the songs we sing may stir something up inside of you (we definitely do choose songs that strike a chord (no pun intended). 🥹Sometimes the lyrics or the gorgeous harmonies touch a place inside that we normally don’t allow ourselves to feel. If emotion comes up, that’s very normal (and human)! Other singers might be feeling the same and show emotion, too. That’s what brings us together and makes us human. The beautiful thing that happens here is that we connect to ourselves and others on a much deeper level.
-
Yes. Come as you are. All are welcome as long as you’re kind, respect the space and others around you.
-
We hope so. There might be different levels of accessibility depending on the space. If we are at the Winston Salem Wellness Collective, then some parts of the main singing area do have one or two steps and no wheelchair ramps. There are also a couple of steps to get to the restroom from our singing area. If you have a disability or health condition that has particular needs or accommodations, please use the contact form below to describe what your needs are and we’ll do our absolute best to accommodate you.
-
We believe that music and connection are our birthright, and that no one should be denied access due to lack of funds. We do have a couple of options. If you know you’d like to be involved with all upcoming events, you can fill out our volunteer form and be considered for a permanent spot on our support team. If we have a need that you can fill (like registration help or event set-up/clean-up), you’ll have free access to our events. Alternatively, you can fill out our scholarship application and be considered to have your registration paid for by our scholarship fund.

Our lead facilitator is Lauren Leigh Henry, a lifelong choir kid, member of a professional choral ensemble and deep feeler who’s been on a soul healing journey for about 18 years. She leads wellness and breathwork workshops, and when she’s not preparing for a pop up choir or wellness event, she works as an RN at a local hospital.
There may be other co-facilitators who come to assist or lead a song or warmup.

Possibly, let’s talk about it. Use the contact form below to reach out, describing the specifics of your singing space, the singers and your vision for the event.

If and when we outgrow our current space, we’ll definitely need a bigger space! We are open to suggestions and being connected with owners of a big, acoustically beautiful space that gives singers an incredible experience. If you would like to invite our singers to use your space, and it can easily fit 50-100+ singers with drums and other instruments & sound systems, use our contact form to get in touch!

At this time, no, but we are getting our ducks in a row to see what this movement could turn into. It’s definitely possible that we might go the nonprofit route. Proceeds from our events right now will be going toward event production costs and saving toward purchasing the necessary systems and equipment we need to grow. We’re optimistic and committed to making our pop up choir events the best of its kind in our region of the country.
